The agent that knows when to stop
Capability is not measured only by how far a system can go. In a company, it is also measured by whether the system recognizes the moment where authority changes hands.

Stopping is part of the work
Software usually treats a pause as failure: a missing permission, an exception, or a workflow that could not finish. Company work is different. A pause can be the correct outcome when the next step spends money, changes a customer relationship, publishes a promise, or creates a legal commitment.
The useful agent does not merely encounter that boundary. It prepares for it. The evidence is assembled, the proposed action is explicit, the consequence is legible, and the person with authority receives a decision instead of a scavenger hunt.
The most capable agent is the one that knows where capability ends and authority begins.
A gate without context is ceremony
An approve button creates very little safety on its own. If the reviewer cannot see which system will change, which evidence supports the action, how much it costs, and whether it can be reversed, the interface is asking for trust before it has earned understanding.
Good approval design compresses the investigation without hiding it. The summary explains why the action is proposed. The sources remain available. Alternatives are named. Uncertainty is visible. A person can decide quickly because the product has made the decision smaller, not because it has made the risk disappear.
Boundaries can become intelligence
Every correction teaches the company something. A rejected refund clarifies policy. A changed message reveals tone. A reduced budget changes the range of acceptable plans. If those choices vanish after the click, governance remains a repeated tax.
When the rationale becomes company memory, the same boundary grows more precise. The system learns which categories are routine, which exceptions deserve escalation, and which assumptions must never be made silently. Control becomes part of how the workforce improves.
Autonomy should expand by evidence
A trustworthy operating range is earned through inspectable outcomes. Read-only work can become approval-gated execution. Familiar, reversible categories may eventually become automatic. Consequential categories can remain human forever without making the system less useful.
This is a more durable path than asking a company to choose between manual work and general autonomy. The relationship grows one bounded capability at a time, with a record of what happened and a visible way back.
